Q: What does it look like when someone neglects a blog for months?

A: Hi I’m Kienan, nice to meet you.

I figured instead of doing what I usually do, which is stick massive lengths of silence and inactivity between posts, I’d hack together some more frequent summaries of what I’m working on at the given time.

First of all, as you may have noticed depending on where you’re reading this, I’m starting to cross-post things to Medium! I’m not a massive fan of duplicating content and decentralizing stuff, but let’s face it, I suck at publicity, and if Medium can do some of that {better, for me} then I’m all for it.

Second, and on a similar note, I’m probably going to muck around with the projects page of my website soon. At the time I was happy with the project-specific stuff it added, but in retrospect, it’s too complicated. I’ll probably just go with a tags system instead or something. (There are times where I wish I hadn’t hand-coded the site, but ah well)

After finding out that it’s one of Lepht Anonym’s favorite books, I rediscovered Hacking: The Art of Exploitation, a tome that I’ve had for years but never been able to properly read through. I’ve started again and I’ve already learned a ton.

I’m psyched for the school year to gear up, because it means I’m going to start taking classes about machine learning, computer organization, programming languages, and possibly an intro management course. I might swap that last one out for a parallel programming course, we’ll see how things go.

Probably the project I most want to focus on right now (because saying “the project I’m focusing the most on right now” is a laughably worthless sentence) is DeadSimpleSockets, a C++ library I’m working on that’s designed to serve as a plug-and-play client/server solution. I know things like libsockets already exist, but they’re not quite as simple as I’d like them, and hey???—???maybe DSS would fill a different niche than libsockets. Nothing’s in master as of writing because I’m not putting anything there until I have a working release ready, but if you’re curious you can check out the dev branch.

Seeing as how Valvers got around to posting the fifth part of their RasPi barebones series, I’ll probably dive back into that to see if I can get it to work.

There’s another project I’m excited about but keeping under wraps for the moment; more info on that coming…probably soon? I’m also learning some After Effects/Premier Pro/Illustrator/maybe Photoshop stuff, so there’s that. Oh and I need a new mouse, because my trusty seven-year-old Logitech VX Nano, which now apparently goes for hundreds of dollars I kid you not, finally bit the dust. And by bit the dust, I mean I accidentally doused it with my second ever cup of coffee. Using my phone’s alright but it’s a poor substitute. Longer post on that coming up.

EDIT: Scratch that. The thing has, miraculously and inexplicably, just come back to life. This mouse is tough.

So in short, cool things a-comin’! Stay frosty.
